The SDHBS are delighted to announce the winner of this year’s National Herd Competition – Mr Douglas Scott’s Grove herd, from Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire!
Comprising some 93 pedigree South Devon cows this suckler herd grazes 257 acres on Oxford clay. The herd is mostly spring calving, with a small autumn calving group. Up to ten breeding bulls are selected each year, and sold through Society Sales and privately off the farm. Remaining males are castrated and sold mainly as stores. Up to 30 females are sold for breeding, mainly as maiden heifers.
Bloodlines go back to when the herd was first established in 1977 at its former home in Hertfordshire, including Powderham, Edmeston, Trevassack, Coombe Farm, Waddeton, Roskymer, Sexton, Lyneham and Winsor.
Today’s stock bulls are from the Waddeton, Oxey, Lumbylaw, Woodhayes and Upper Norton herds, and include some polling genetics.
The herd is Breedplan performance recorded, and a member of CHeCS HiHealth Herdcare, risk level 1 for Johnes, accredited for BVD, and vaccinating for Lepto.
The herd celebrated its win by welcoming almost 100 South Devon Society members and guests to an Open Day, on a glorious early October afternoon when the cattle were looking at their best in the sunshine.
